Old Friends New Friends

I read this first when I was 17 and was assigned it in high school, and again just now when I am 53. This truly is a great book. But it should not be assigned to kids to read in high school. The assumption is that because it is about a teenager they will somehow empathize with Holden Caufield, and so be introduced to great literature. But I don’t think that kids that age have the level of self-awareness necessary to appreciate what Holden is going through. It’s the kind of thing you have to look back on to get. Certainly that is the experience of Holden himself. He has no appreciation of the events that are transforming him and only a dim understanding that he might be receiving useful advice along the way. So I expect it is the same with many of the kids who are forced to read this in high school. Wait until you are well past the experience, and I think you will appreciate this book a lot more.

This is one of the best books I have ever read! It has so much to offer…disturbing moments, touching moments, REALLY interesting moments, dry-humor…and many of the accounts by “Jacob” are based on real-life stories from happenings of traveling circuses in the 20’s-30’s. I will probably read this again in a few months. Great read!
New LIght on your

Forty minutes ago, I got a real shock. My bare foot bumped into this scale and it bumped into the toilet. I heard an explosion, and the glass blew all over the bathroom floor, even out into the hall past the open bathroom door. By the way, I did not bump this with much force. I wasn’t running – more like shuffling. The noise was so loud, I was certain that somehow it was the toilet that cracked or blew a hole in it.

This scale is beautiful. It’s always worked. It seems accurate to me. But…

Both of my feet are bleeding on top of both my feet from shards so small, I don’t even know where they went. Both wounds look like pinholes, but you should have seen the blood gush. I’m sure I swept up most of the glass, but anything I missed will turn up in the next couple of days… in my feet!

Small and large chunks of crystalized glass are all over the place. I even took a couple of pictures in case anyone is interested. The entire top plate is exploded and the underlying plastic is in pieces, too, with wires dangling.

So, who is the maniac that designed this thing? It is dangerous if you have children, and it is dangerous for the elderly. It’s also dangerous if you rely on a blood supply. I bought this for my father to use as he’s 85 years old, and his weight changes are critical. Fortunately, he’s in the hospital now, so at least he’s safe from this thing!

I heartily recommend this product unless safety is a concern. Think I’ll buy another? Are ya nuts???!!!

I’ve never tried to write a review of a movie before, and frankly, don’t feel particularly well equipped to do so. However, considering how many people walked out of this movie both times I saw it (about 15 total), and the mixed word-of-mouth I’m picking up, I felt the need to speak up.

This is a great movie.

It may not be to everyone’s taste, but I am convinced that even people who disliked the film recognized that they were watching the work of a major talent. Don’t let the long running time of this movie scare you off. Paul Thomas Anderson maintains tension and energy throughout, via a combination of great writing, directing, and editing. The only moments I wasn’t completely absorbed in the film were the many times I paused to note to myself, “This guy is good.”

This movie is unquestionably a must see. There’s no guarantee you’ll love it, but you should not take the chance that you’ll miss what could be (I’m resisting the arrogant temptation to say ’should be’) one of your more rewarding film experiences in quite some time.

I have had this scale for 2 1/2 months. So far, we have been very pleased with it. It looks great, and it is very stable when I stand on it. However, that would not matter if it did not work well. I tested it against our older scale that works good, but the readout window is small and hard to see. The EatSmart scale has a very large, bright, & clear readout window that gives us a fast and accurate read every time. My wife likes that it gives us a read in tenths of a pound. Our old one does not.

It worked great…for half of my bedroom…Then It quit vacuming the cleaning solution from the carpet…Nice…dirty, wet, carpet. It’s a piece of garbage. I have to take it to the repair center because I didn’t want to pay another $25.00 to return it. If someone tries to sell you one of these, run for your life.
