When a person says that God inspired them or told them something the first question that should come to your mind is which God? The God of the Bible? Don’t think so as it contradicts many of the ways and teachings that that God revealed through others. Perhaps it is the God of this world, Satan? He is a good candidate since he likes to contradict the God of the Bible. And then there is the God of Islam, and the gods of hindu and the gods of shinto and so on and so on. And there are religions that say you are a God so then this is just a book about the author expressing his own opinion and since he makes some claims that are scientifically false, perhaps this is the God he is really talking to.

The games on the Wii are so much fun that you don’t realize your muscles are working hard (until the next day!) I have had so many friends comment great reviews on the Wii. Would definately recommend!!! Definately try the Wii fit plus game.

I read this novel from start to finish over two busy days. Could not put it down. I was “lost” in it and would look up wondering how I got back here gain.

What amazed me were the memories it brought up. I was a northerner living in the south in 1970 while my husband was in graduate school. As a Yankee the only job I could get was in a poverty program where I was often only one of the white staff.

What I remember was learning what words nd situations created the hush and tension and fear. I had my tires slashed one night. When I read about Aibeleen and Minny’s fear of what would descend upon them if they were found out–my mouth was dry and my heart was pounding.

How come no one has mentioned the legitimate fear; the raw courage of the women who spoke out. What I remember was just the everydayness of the terror of racism, and the subtle changes that people slowly negotiated and that brought some relief and the dance we are all still doing.

Having a Harvard educated, half-white, half foregin born African President of the United States hasn’t quieted some people’s hatred and projections.

What a complicated country we live in. How perfectly Kathryn Stockett has helped me relive some experiences I couldn’t begin to express.

Of course it is written 40+ years later by a young white person, the plot is condensed and it may be imperfect. But it is a great story, a rush to read, and an experience to ponder.

Old Friends New Friends

This is the most wonderful media device I’ve found in the last few years, even better than a touch Ipod. My eyesight is getting bad, so the ability to choose the size of the font was the top selling point for me. I also love the facts that: I can carry around a dozen or more books in a machine smaller than a hardback book and only 1/2″ thick, I can recharge it using any normal wall outlet, and I’m able to connect to Amazon.com through wi-fi anywhere—it is my Miracle device!!! I’ve had no problem with my Kindle in the 1-1/2 months I’ve owned it and the dozen books I’ve read on it. I quickly got used to lightly pressing the button to move forward and backward, and the Menu button works well–especially if you follow the instructions properly :-}

By the way, the free games I downloaded at Amazon.com are lots of fun, especially when waiting at the doctor’s office.

Lite on Shoulder Baby

This week’s book is Artemis Fowl, which I loved. Artemis Fowl is a twelve year old genius criminal mastermind (awesome) who kidnaps a fairy and holds her hostage to extort fairy gold (more awesome) from the hidden kingdom of magical creatures. Eoin Colfer approaches this material in a way that is fresh, exciting, and not the least bit patronizing so that adults will be able to enjoy this book as much as their children.

Artemis is a welcome change from the standard unlucky but scrappy hero (whose parents are probably dead) who means well and is genuinely courageous that populates most MG series. Artemis Fowl doesn’t mean well for anyone but himself and his mother. He is relentlessly cold in his assessment of people and situations and he even poisons a fairy (don’t worry, this is MG and the fairy comes out okay, but still…). Artemis doesn’t kill anyone, but murder is never an impossibility for him (in fact, he threatens nearly everyone he meets) and that keeps the character fresh and interesting.

Also fun are Colfer’s amusing pairings of traditional magic with modern technology so that the fairies are part standard magical creature, part Men In Black. Various characters have guns, ninja skills, bombs, and the ability to eat through nearly anything. The whole affair reads like a big budget summer movie and that’s a compliment. I love summer movies and I loved Artemis Fowl.

Of special note to writers: witness how Colfer easily navigates through multiple third person fixed perspectives. His narrative is never restricted to just one character, which is a break from the norm in MG fiction and admirable. Although Artemis Fowl is unquestionably the main character, he isn’t always the current protagonist in the text. Colfer more often writes from the perspective of various fairies and even a dwarf, each with their own goal and story to tell. And the novel is all the richer for it.

After having spent the last few years immersed in a Twilight world I figured I would break down and finally read the books so I could discover for myself what all the hoopla was about. I borrowed all four novels, for lack of a better word, from a Twi-hard friend and sat down to complete the task, resolved to finish the whole thing from front to back. It’s four days of my life I will never get back. What absolute drivel.

My first complaint is thesaurus rape, that’s right, the molestation of a thesaurus should be an actual crime. Right out of the box this story reeked of amateurism. Ms. Meyer, simply because a word can be used doesn’t mean that it should be… please, put the thesaurus down and step away slowly.

Alright, now down to the meat of my poor review, the actual story itself. It is, in one word, boring. The characters are one dimensional and lack any and all ability to stand on their own merit, the plot is shaky at best and the dialogue is more unbelievable than Santa Claus. In fiction, we get to leave our meager little worlds and suspend belief, that’s the joy of reading fiction in the first place. It’s a window into another world, it whisks us away from the every day doldrums and allows us a chance for something different, something better. But in all good fiction, there is still a foot in the world of reality. Those authors who excel at writing fiction, like King or Ketchum, understand that and write for those readers who live here on earth with the rest of us homosapiens. When nothing about a book is at all believable, I take issue with it. Certainly vampires are not real, we all get that. But teenagers are most definitely real. Bella Swan (I mean really?) vacillates between whiney, selfish, brat to evolved, intellectual, super girlfriend? Huh? Does she have some kind of personality disorder we should be aware of or did I just miss something?

This tool kit is a great way to start fixing biking. I realized that my chain needs replacement badly. Being a beginner, it is a great way to start. The set of tools are just right.

I am not sure whether I am going to use the ‘true’ing tools. I bought Park Blue Book II also, which makes the reference to the tools in this kit.
